Lebrecht
Music & Arts is
proud to announce that we have added 80,000 new images
to our website in the last two and a half years. Essentially
that means we have doubled the high res images available
at www.lebrecht.co.uk to
our loyal clients. After such a busy time
processing this material, we will be using our
newsletters to communicate about all the
new subjects that we cover. This
month our focus is on Spanish imagery. Spain's
contribution to visual arts, literature, music and film
has been decisive, original and hugely influential. Over
the past six months, we have been amassing archival
images, contacting our photographers and working with a
wonderful partner collection in Spain to bring together
the best images of this rich culture.
As summer draws to a close, we picked an
autumnal image from our fine arts collection for this
month's header image: A
still-life with peaches and vine leaves by
Italian artist, Giovanni Ambrogio Figino (circa
1551-1608).

History
Our
new collection covers imagery from Spains's early
history, her famous GoldenAge
and twentieth-century events, such as the Spanish Civil
War. The Iberian Peninsula has been the target of
various civilisations: the Carthaginians and Romans
fought for her control; the Moslem Arabs conquered the
Visigoths and ruled for over 700 years; followed by the
Christian Kings, the Habsburgs, who initiated one of the
world's largest empires. Lebrecht's archive holds
impressive portraits of Spanish monarchs and their
battles.
Other
collection highlights include photographs of beautiful
Moorish mosques such as the Cathedral-Mosque of Córdoba;
monasteries including the monastery of Sant Cugat; the
remains of Jewish communities in Galacia; and Medieval
fortresses such as the Castle of La Mota in Medina del
Campo. We also have spectacular photographs
showing the dramatic countryside of this vast
peninsula. To view a lightbox of images, click on the

Fine Art
Spain
has a strong visual culture and has produced many
great artists, from the Renaissance Master, El
Greco, whohelped create a uniquely Spanish style of
painting, to
court painters like Diego Velazquez and Goya, who
left lasting impressions and critiques of Spanish
society. Twentieth-century Spain produced the
towering figures of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and
architect, Antoni Gaudi.
Our collection covers artworks by Spanish masters as
well as portraits of the artists themselves, from
Horst Tappe's playful portraits of Dali to
photographs of Picasso touring his workshop with
Brigitte Bardot. Click on the striking painting by Diego
Velázquez to
