Jesus Christ Superstar Anniversary

Forty years ago Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical Jesus Christ Superstar opened at the Palace Theatre in London in 1972, starring Paul Nicholas as Jesus – unique photographs were taken by Lebrecht photographer John Haynes. The musical attempts to give a modern retelling of the story of Jesus while making Judas Iscariot a tragic figure as opposed to the normal villain of the piece.

It ran for eight years and was a major box office success. If you missed it then there is a chance to see a new version – an arena tour which starts on 21 September.

Zsuzsi Roboz‘ complete exhibition of author pictures from the Messum’s Fine Art Gallery of Cork Street, London can now be seen on our website at www.lebrecht.co.uk

The writers include Will Self, Anita Brookner, Brian Sewell, Hilary Mantel, Seamus Heaney, Josephine Hart, Colm Toibin, James Toibin. These portraits illustrate Zsuzsi Roboz’ finely honed skills as a draughtswoman and her insightful perception of her subjects. She always had the skill to intuit the very essence of her subjects. Her contribution to the world of art continues to be missed.

Olympic torch 2012

Lebrecht Music & Arts was outside the Roundhouse, cultural centre in Camden Town, this morning at 6.25 am waiting for the Olympic Flame to leave the Roundhouse and start on its final journey to the Olympic stadium at Stratford.

Thousands of locals from Hampstead, Camden Town, Kentish Town and Belsize Park thronged the street with young children listening to the mass choir of 75 Camden singers giving it their best. A great local event for the Arts and for the Olympics.
