‘The Sinking of the Titanic’ by Gavin Bryars

Gavin Bryars played the double bass in the performance of his composition ‘The Sinking of the Titanic’ at the Barbican Hall, London on 15th April 2012. This work was originally composed in 1969 and premiered at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London in 1972. The Barbican performance commemorated the 100 th anniversary of this tragic event in 1912. Gavin Bryars wrote:’ Working as I was in an art college environment I was interested to see what might be the musical equivalent of a work of conceptual art. It was not until 1972 that I made a performing version of the piece for part of an evening of my work at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London.’

First ever UK performance of Einstein on the Beach opening at The Barbican in London on 4 May 2012

Lebrecht Music & Arts has very special images of composer Philip Glass and director Robert Wilson planning their opera, ‘Einstein on the Beach’, in New York in May 1976. The work premiered at the Avignon Festival in France in July that year.

These intimate photographs were taken by Lebrecht photographer, Betty Freeman. As well as a photographer, Freeman was a well-known patron of the arts and assisted Glass and many other composers during her lifetime. For more images of Glass and Wilson, search online at www.lebrecht.co.uk.
